Should You Consider Weight Loss Surgery?

 

 

 

 

Weight loss surgery, also referred to as bariatric surgery, is an option for many chronically obese people who have been unsuccessful with other diets and exercise routines. There are several types of weight loss surgery, all of which are done for people who are at least 100 pounds overweight and/or who have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or more, and have been in this condition for at least 5 years. Chronic obesity can lead to a range of life-threatening health problems such as heart disease, diabetes, sleep apnea, arthritis, and more.

Weight loss surgery can involve either of two approaches, according to The American Society for Bariatric Surgery. One type includes restrictive procedures, which help to limit the patient's need for food intake to one meal a day, but don't affect the digestion of food. The other type includes malabsorptive procedures, which alter the process of digestion and thus help the patient to reduce their absorption of calories.

There are two major types of restrictive procedures:
1. Lap band surgery, which through laparoscopic surgery places a silicone gastric band around the top of the stomach to reduce the size of the stomach pouch. This type of surgery allows a person to feel full after eating only a small amount of food

2. Gastric bypass surgery, which involves stapling the small, upper part of the stomach to separate it from the rest of the stomach, and then rerouting the small intestine to connect it to the smaller stomach pouch.

Of the two procedures, gastric bypass surgery is more complex than lap band surgery, which is relatively uncomplicated and only requires a hospital stay of 1-3 days. In comparison, gastric bypass surgery usually calls for a 5-8 day stay in the hospital.

Gastric bypass surgery patients can expect to lose 70-75% of their body fat in an 18-month period, while lap band surgery patients usually lose about 50-60% of their excess weight.

Both of these procedures can be reversed, but the reversal of lap band surgery is much easier.

Weight loss experts rarely recommend malabsorptive procedures now, because of the wide range of problems they can cause, especially those related to malnutrition and nutritional deficiencies.

Of course, you should talk to your doctor about the pros and cons of bariatric surgery before you make a decision. And keep in mind that the long-term success of your surgery will depend on your ability to change your diet and lifestyle permanently.

6 Quick Weight Loss Strategies That Backfire Every Time







1. SKIP BREAKFAST (or other meals)
When you cut calories, you will lose weight. That much is true. But skipping a meal is not the right way to do this - especially if the meal you skip is breakfast.
Much better than skipping any meal is eating more often - that's right we said eating more often.
Here's why... When you skip a meal or two, your body reacts by slowing the metabolism. Then when it's time to eat, you're hungrier and you end up eating more than your metabolism can handle.
This means that if you normally eat 1,800 calories, but then decide to lose weight by skipping breakfast and lunch but then eat 1,200 calories at dinner, your metabolism isn't "up and running" to handle the sudden calorie load at dinner time and the extra calories get stored - as fat.
So skipping a meal or two might sound good and right for losing weight, but it is the wrong thing to do.
Much better is to eat more often - maybe 5 or 6 times per day. If you can graze on smaller portions all through the day, your body's metabolism can handle it and nothing is sent to fat storage - provided of course that you stay within the normal calorie guidelines for your body type.
2. CUT YOUR CALORIES WAY BACK
Cutting calories is definitely the way to lose weight but if you are too dramatic about it, then your body will over-react and go into starvation mode.
If your body thinks that there is no enough food to be had, it will react by hanging on to whatever fat it can - to keep you alive all through the "starvation mode".
What does this mean for you? Unless you are using prescription weight loss medication under doctors' orders, you should never be eating less than 1,200 calories per day for women or 1,400 calories per day for men.
3. WALK EVERY DAY
Walk yourself thin. Sounds good, doesn't it?
The problem is that going for a walk is a low-intensity, low-calorie effort. So while it may take some weight off if you really have lots to lose, it won't do the job you want if you're trying to get down to your ideal weight.
When doctors say get some exercise to lose weight, we're talking about other higher-intensity cardiovascular activities - like jogging, swimming, gym class or pretty much anything that gets you into a sweat.
This is the rule off thumb to follow - if your exercise breaks you into a sweat and you're doing it 3 or more times a week for 30 minutes or more, then you're on the right track.
Of course, sweating as you walk to the pool doesn't count!
4. CUT OUT YOUR COMFORT FOODS
Lots of people follow this strategy for unsuccessful weight loss - just cut out your worst food weakness and off go the pounds.
While you may feel good about putting yourself through the pain and suffering of denial, it sure doesn't help take off the pounds.
Losing weight is a whole day, every day affair, not just skipping pizza or cake.
After all, when you skip your favorite comfort food, our minds work to tell us we "deserve" something else and so we reward ourselves with an extra scoop of this or that.
Even worse, if you really suffer in your denial, it quite often backfires ending up with you wanting those comfort foods so much that you break down, eat them anyway, and give up on your healthy ways entirely.
Better to stay on track with your weight loss campaign and eat just small amounts of these "special comforts" as needed each day to stay feeling satisfied and not guilty.
5. TAKE A SAUNA
Getting hot and sweaty in the sauna might seem like a good workout, but it's not at all a weight loss solution.
What's happening in the sauna is that your sweating and losing a lot of liquid mass otherwise retained in your body. In fact, if you weigh yourself after the sauna, you will generally weigh less - maybe even lose 2-3 pounds or more!
All that sweating might feel good and the scale might give you a good report, but none of it lasts because your body will just replace the lost water mass as soon as it can you'll be right back where you started.
Save the sauna for a special treat after the gym, but don't use it as a weight loss tool.
6. CUT OUT THE CARBS
Well, Dr. Atkins sure got us going on this one, didn't he?
Just about everyone has lost weight with something like the Atkins Diet, which suggested eating mainly protein and no carbs.
The carb free diet works well, but like the sauna trick, the weight comes back on once you stop.
Staying on a carb-free diet is not permanent solution since it misses out on too many healthy foods that contain carbs but are needed by the body - like fruits and whole grains with the minerals, vitamins and fiber that your body needs.
You can try the carb-free lifestyle to lose weight like so many other people have, but your weight will almost certainly come back once you stop. By planning a favourite meal or snack which is no longer part of your diet every once in a while, you'll reward yourself, keep your motivation up and it won't affect your healthy regime. Skinny people eat chips once in a while too you know!

  10. Keep your final goal in mind. You've done well so far but you're not there yet. Whether you picture real people of your ideal weight or you imagine yourself that size, it's a great way to remember you can't rest on your laurels just yet and you still need to work hard to get there.

Motivate yourself to loss weight





I use a few ways to motivate myself to lose weight when im in doubt. Perhaps the best way to do this is to simply realize how you feel when your overweight compared to in shape. I know when I am the least bit overweight I feel pretty bad in general.
 I dont like this feeling at all and realize the only way to get rid of it is to lose weight. Lets just be honest here, when your overweight you feel pretty crappy.
1. When you lose weight you know you will feel better about yourself. I hate to say it but a lot of people view overweight people as lazy and it can be bad for everyday such as a job interview.
I know there are people out there who disagree, but im willing to bet that at least 30% of the population views overweight people as lazy or slobs. I know some people are overweight when they try to diet and this is not true, but im just giving you some of the facts I think are true.
So you can use this as a motivational factor and show those type of people that you are not lazy and can knock off the weight!
2. You always have those people who make fat jokes right? You can tell them all day that you are trying to lose weight but the only way you are ever going to get back at them is to actually lose the weight. You know you have a good head on your shoulders if you prove people wrong when you have a big obstacle to get over to reach your goal. Use peoples negative comments as fuel to reach your goal and it will be all that much sweater when you reach your goal.
3. When I motivate myself to lose weight I try to picture my goal already. Its important to see where you are going to be in the future, so go ahead and vision yourself thin and trim. In fact go ahead and buy some clothes that fit the thinner you, because your gonna reach your goal! Im serious, this can be one of the most powerful ways to reach your goals actually. Go buy at least one shirt that will fit your new thinner body and you will reach your goal because you cannot quit until you fit into the shirt!
I think any goal including weight loss is reached easier if you make a vision of your future.
This motivates your minds actually even when we are not aware of it. So please follow these little motivational tips and you will start to see your goals becoming reality.

Now he takes controlled diet and lives with a peaceful mind that he can eat when he wants. His appetite is intact, but he is dieting on choice.

Finally, the thing is "No pain, no gain". If any person truly want to have a fit and healthy body, by losing weight, then one should try slowly. One should not fall for quick weight loss programs. If one find any program too good to be true, then they are. So always avoid them.

Not every pregnant woman is going to gain the same amount of weight, nor will they gain at the same rate. Obviously every woman -- and pregnancy -- is unique! However, it's important to follow a few guidelines to help keep you on track and aware.
Maintaining a healthy weight will not only be beneficial to you, but also to your baby. It will also help to avoid certain illnesses related to pregnancy, such as gestational diabetes.
How Much Weight Should Be Gained During Pregnancy?
An average-weight woman should gain between 25 and 35 pounds throughout the entire pregnancy. Overweight Women should aim to gain a little less -- about 15 pounds, and underweight women should aim for a little more -- about 35-45 pounds.
Pregnant women expecting multiples will probably gain more weight than those carrying only one baby.
How Should the Weight Be Gained?
The term "eating for two" is misleading, and unhealthy. Despite the fact that there is another human growing inside of you, you do not require twice the amount of food you once did prior to being pregnant. Lose5in7 - Fastest Weight Loss System






There are a lot of busy people who want to lose weight but do not have the time at the local gym or in their kitchens preparing healthy and nutritious meals that will help them lose weight. No matter how busy you are, you can lose weight, too. All you need to do is to come up with a weight loss system that will help gear up your metabolism - you will end up having a trim figure in no time.
Make sure you come up with a plan for each day:
You should make sure that you spend a couple of minutes drawing up a schedule for the next day - you can get a "daily schedule book" and make sure you stick to it. You can write the following in your schedule book:
* Time for workouts
* Type of meals to eat - these meals should be healthy and nutritious
* Time to drink another glass of water

Eat healthy snacks any time, any where
Starving is not and will never be a method to lose weight. The key to shedding weight is by eating healthy snacks around the clock. There are thousands of reasons people struggle to lose weight, but at our personal training studio in Chiswick, one reason stands head and shoulders above all others. I'm talking about blood sugar and insulin resistance.
Although most people know that blood sugar and insulin plays a part, how many of us really know what blood sugars role in causing weight gain really is. Why does blood sugar becomes too high, why does it get too low, why is this important and crucially, how we can regulate it. This an extremely complex and vast topic but I'm going to simplify the subject as much as possible.
BLOOD SUGAR EXPLAINED
Whenever we consume any form of starch or sugar carbohydrate, this becomes available as blood sugar, otherwise known as blood glucose, in the bloodstream. How quickly it converts to blood glucose depends on the glycemic index of the carbohydrate. Glucose itself would have a profile of 100 which means it is all instantly available as blood sugar whilst lentils can have profile of as little as 21 which means the carbohydrate becomes available as sugar more slowly.
When our body detects blood sugar, it releases a hormone from the pancreas called insulin. This increased level of insulin in the bloodstream enables energy from glucose to become available to the muscle and liver cells as energy; see insulin as a key that unlocks the cells to allow the glucose in.
So, if a person who naturally releases too much insulin, eats a high glycemic food like pasta, they will have an oversupply of the hormone. If this same person were to eat a low glycemic carbohydrate like lentils, they would have a much better chance of releasing the sugar more evenly into the blood stream as the insulin released would be lower.
It is important to note that Muscles and the liver only need enough glucose to replenish the stores, and liver stores glucose as glycogen which it makes available in times of crisis. An over production of insulin makes all the glucose instantly available but the muscles and liver cells will only take what they need.
Fat cells, on the other hand, are eager recipients of any blood sugar made available to them by excess insulin, consume the remainder up and thus expand. Fat cells are essentially our emergency stores of energy, for when we run out of food, but only once all the glycogen stores are gone from the liver. As you will see, that's unlikely to happen when we continue to eat refined carbohydrates.
Now, the real problem that has been caused by eating a high glycemic carbohydrate becomes evident. The energy from the pasta has now been utilized by the greedy fat cells, so your blood sugar has dropped too low, the insulin spike caused all of the sugar to become available at once and there is none left.
Your liver is stubborn and doesn't like giving up its stores unless it has to, but we need energy on a constant basis, even while sleeping, and as we discussed your fat cells are not giving up a bean of energy until all the glycogen is gone from your liver.
So your body is faced with a dilemma, it needs some more sugar urgently but the liver is unwilling to release any and the fat cells won't be releasing any until the liver is depleted of glycogen stores. The message is sent to your brain loud and clear. You are hungry. EAT! But you only just ate, how can it be possible that you're hungry again.
Not only has the pasta potentially increased the size of your fat cells, it hasn't even sorted out your hunger levels, because the glucose is no longer available to the muscle cells and liver which need a slow but constant supply. The fat cells had all the glucose and because you're hungry you eat a source of carbohydrates which relieves the hunger quickest. A starchy or sugary carbohydrate. It's a catch 22 in the very truest sense.
This internal message to raise the blood sugar is so overwhelming that seldom will we manage to overcome the craving.
WHAT CAN YOU DO ABOUT IT?
Some people release less insulin naturally and so can tolerate higher glycemic foods, meaning a larger consumption of carbohydrates is not such a problem, in others it can have catastrophic effects on their body composition.
Everybody suggests working on the glycemic index, which is great for some people, but for others the fat cells have grown to such a point where the insulin keys no longer fit the cells to receive the sugar, which is essentially type 2 diabetes.
The ultimate goal is to not have any fluctuation in blood sugar at all.
Think about this for a second. We do all need carbohydrates if only for brain function, anybody who tells you otherwise is probably trying to sell you something. Fortunately, we know that carbohydrates come in 3 forms.
  1. Sugar - which we need to avoid at all costs.
  2. Starch - Although it varies on the GI scale, ultimately becomes glucose which will cause some insulin release and therefore blood sugar variations
  3. Fibre - Which has no impact on blood sugar whatsoever.
What I believe to be the most effective strategy in those with significant blood sugar related weight issues and certainly in type 2 diabetics, is a diet which is very high in fibrous, low starch vegetables. I will often suggest carbohydrates come almost exclusively in the form of green cruciferous vegetables in the early phases of a dietary regime.
Of course, if you are going to take this approach you will also need to consider your intake of good quality fats as an alternative fuel source, but that's a whole new conversation.
In taking a less extreme path towards long term blood sugar balance for those with less pressing blood sugar issues, we can implement a simple intelligent carbohydrate 'swapping' strategy.
Eat only whole natural carbohydrate sources like sweet potato, brown rice, quinoa and lentils in place of white rice, ALL bread and pasta.
Eat fruit as a carbohydrate with some natural Greek yogurt instead of desserts like chocolates and ice creams.
If you really do struggle with complete elimination of refined sugars from your diet then the only instance when eating foods high on the glycemic index could be considered a good idea is post exercise, where the spike in insulin can be beneficial as your muscle cells are more agreeable to receiving the available blood sugar to replenish and repair.
